The Six Stages:

PENCIL SKETCH
I work from a series of photographs, detailed notes and any customer's detailed instructions from a special briefing sheet. Starting with a pencil sketch, I establish the size, set out the page and work out the perspective.

INK LINES
The next step is to pick up the important lines from the sketch in ink and then remove all pencil lines.

BASE PAINT
The base paint is colour washed on. This needs to be done before any detailed drawing to avoid the ink bleeding. As such it is not possible to add colour to a completed pen and ink original.

DRAWING DETAIL
Back to the pens and add the tiles, bricks, leaves etc. I like the picture to be as accurate as possible whilst accommodating customer requests and usually missing out all wires, aerials, cars, road signs etc.

FINISHING
Now for the work that brings the picture alive; the different shades of green in the bushes, the flowers, the imperfections in the tiles and bricks and of course, the shadows. I often work with the pens and paint together at this stage.

MOUNTING
Double mounts of our deluxe range are included in the price with the sepia and colour property portraits. I cut and decorate all of my own mounts and this is the only time I use a ruler in the whole process.

THE ELITE RANGE
The Elite Range have two more stages before mounting. With additional drawing and painting the foreground is brought forward and the whole picture is made to look more three dimensional.
